China expresses desire to enhance cooperation with Ethiopia in legal fields

Addis Ababa, June 30, 2023 (FBC) – State Minister of Justice, Alemante Agidew, conferred with a high-level delegation led by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan.

The meeting was arranged to discuss enduring activities pertaining to strengthening legal cooperation, capacity building and other bilateral issues of mutual concern.

During meeting the State Minister briefed the delegation about tasks accomplished and which are underway in Ethiopia with technical and financial assistance of China and requested for the support to be replicated in the justice sector.

The State Minister recalled that the two countries already have functional bilateral treaties on extradition and judicial assistance in civil matters and expressed Ethiopia’s willingness to conclude similar bilateral treaties on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and transfer of sentenced persons.

The State Minister further stressed the need to take the necessary measures in accordance with the law of the respective countries without undue delay where nationals of each country are suspected of a crime and detained.

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan on his part stated that there is an earnest desire to further strengthen the long standing cooperation between the two countries in the legal field and expressed his hope that the cases of Chinese nationals under detention will be settled without delay in accordance with the applicable law of the Country.
