China Building Almost Twice Green Energy Capacity as Rest of World – NGO
MOSCOW, July 11 (Sputnik) – China is on its way to build nearly twice as much renewable energy capacity as the rest of the world combined, the Global Energy Monitor (GEM) non-governmental organization said on Thursday.
“China is cementing its position as the global leader in renewables development with 180 GW of utility-scale solar and 159 GW of wind power already under construction. The total of the two is nearly twice as much as the rest of the world combined, and enough to power all of South Korea,” the GEM said in a report.
In comparison, the United States has 40 gigawatts of utility-scale solar and wind power capacity under construction.
“China added almost twice as much utility-scale solar and wind power capacity in 2023 than in any other year. By the first quarter of 2024, China’s total utility-scale solar and wind capacity reached 758 GW, though data from China Electricity Council put the total capacity, including distributed solar, at 1,120 GW,” the report read.
In March, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the importance of increasing efforts to facilitate the high-quality development of green energy in China.
