CAR holds election re-run after rebel attacks
Addis Ababa, March 14, 2021 (FBC) – Voters in the Central African Republic (CCAR) are going to the polls for a second round of legislative elections after December’s first round was disrupted by rebel groups.
Elections are being held in 118 of the CAR’s 140 constituencies – voting was not possible in 69 – while a second round is being held in 49 after no candidate secured an outright majority.
The authorities in the capital, Bangui, say the security situation has now significantly improved. Both Rwanda and Russia have sent troops to back government forces.
UN peacekeepers in the country say their forces are also better positioned to help secure the elections, according to BBC.
