Briefing Session on the Establishment of International Organization for Mediation Held in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, September 24, 2024 (FBC) – A Briefing Session on the progress and preparation for the establishment of International Organization for Mediation was held in Addis Ababa earlier today.
The Event brought together Senior Officials of the Ethiopian and Chinese Foreign Ministries, representatives of the Organization’s Preparatory Office in China, Members of the diplomatic community of African countries based in Addis Ababa, scholars and other invited guests.
Ambassador Negus Kebede, Head of Middle East, Asian and Pacific Countries Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia who made an opening speech remarked that the Event serves as a venue to share insights in the efforts of making mediation an effective conflict resolution mechanism to create peaceful and harmonious world.
Mr. Ma Xinmin, Director General of Treaty and Law department at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on his part stated that the Organization will be the first Intergovernmental Institution dedicated to resolve international disputes through mediation.
He added that the Organization echoes the International Community’s call for peace, security, fairness and win- win cooperation.
Ambassador Reta Alemu, the Director General for the International Legal Affairs at the Ministry, who moderated the session, stated that Ethiopia has been a supporter of the ideals and processes of the establishment of the Organization and called for more African countries to join the efforts of realizing the Organization.
He further remarked that the Organization will enable dispute resolution at bilateral and multilateral levels.
The fifth session of the elaboration on the Convention of the organization will be held in Hong Kong from 14-17 October, 2024.
