BRICS senior officials national technical committee convenes

Addis Ababa, January 30, 2025 (FMC) – The BRICS Senior Officials National Technical Committee meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this afternoon to deliberate on 2025 BRICS activities under Brazil’s BRICS Presidency.

The gathering was chaired by Ambassador Minelik Alemu Getahun, Special Policy Advisor of the Foreign Minister. At the meeting, Ambassador Lemlem Fiseha, the Director General for International Organizations Affairs, and responsible for BRICS activities summarized Ethiopia’s achievements in 2024 and outlined Ethiopia’s BRICS 2025 Outlook.

Ambassador Lemlem stated that BRICS is an additional crucial platform for Ethiopia to foster partnerships that help realize its national interests and foreign policy objectives. She noted that Ethiopia will make the best use of the partnership and the bilateral relations with BRICS countries and partner states to attain tangible and mutually beneficial outcomes in the fields of agriculture, infrastructural development, health, education, trade, and investment among others. Ethiopia will continue its longstanding practice of advancing its consensus-building engagements, Ambassador Lemlem said.

The meeting deliberated on Ethiopia’s 2025 BRICS Outlook. Sector representatives provided substantive inputs and shared their views on the targets set for 2025 in line with Ethiopia’s BRICS Engagement Strategy.  The Technical Committee underscored the need to strengthen intersectoral coordination, synergetic monitoring and support mechanisms, and a strong communication strategy.

Participants representing 21 government institutions participated in the meeting, according to the Ethiopian foreign ministry.

It is to be recalled that Brazil officially assumed BRICS Presidency on 1 January 2025 and will preside over the works of the partnership that now has eleven BRICS countries and nine Partner states.
