Australia approves $23million humanitarian assistance for East African countries including Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, June 22, 2024 (FBC) – Australia will send 23 million USD in humanitarian assistance to people in need due to manmade and natural disasters including conflicts in the Horn of Africa.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has today approved the aid package to support critical needs and services for those in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.
“Australia is gravely concerned by the humanitarian situation in the Horn of Africa and is working with international partners to help the most vulnerable in the region,” she said.
“We continue to advocate for political solutions to these conflicts and to call for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian organizations.”
Sudanese people will receive 13 million USD to assist civilians displaced due to the ongoing conflict in the country.
Ethiopia and Somalia will get 6 million USD to support those affected from manmade and natural disasters including conflict, drought and flooding.
Kenya will also receive 4 million USD in response to devastating floods and food insecurity following the effects of droughts.
The assistance will be delivered through Australian and local NGOs, the International Committee of the Red Cross and UN partners.
