AU’s 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council underway
Addis Ababa, February 14, 2024 (FBC) – The African Union’s 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council has kicked off at the AU Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, today.
Speakers at the official opening of the Executive Council included AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, Ethiopian Minister of Foreign Affairs Taye Atske Selassie, Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, and Chair of the AU Executive Council Dhoihir Dhoulkamal.
Scheduled for February 14 – 15, 2024, the ordinary session brings together foreign ministers and representatives of AU member states and international institutions as well as Non-AU member states accredited to the AU.
Ahead of the Executive Council’s 44th session, foreign ministers of various African countries have arrived in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, since Monday the 12th of February.
It is indicated that this pivotal meeting is key to Africa’s development, focusing on strategic decisions like trade, education youth and women development, agriculture, climate change, peace and security, culture, among others that drive the continent’s agenda forward.
Meanwhile, the 47th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (Ambassadors) will be held from 15th to 26th January 2024 in Addis Ababa, AU’s schedule indicates.
The main event of this year’s AU Summit, the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union, will also be held from 17th to 18th February 2024.
According to AU’s recent press notification, peace, integration and development will be among top agenda items throughout the current African Union summit.
In the build up to the AU Summit, the Ethiopian government confirmed that all the necessary preparations have been completed to successfully host the continent’s biggest gathering.
