Ethiopia has hosted the First Africa Urban Forum under the auspices of the African Union, brought together key stakeholders to discuss and shape the future of urbanization across Africa.

In her opening remarks, the minister highlighted the forum, themed “Sustainable Urbanization for Africa Transformation: Agenda 2063,” represents a significant milestone in addressing the continent’s urban challenges.

As a host country, Ethiopia plays greater role in fostering a Pan-African spirit and promote Africa’s urban agendas, she stated.

Chaltu elaborated: “Our cities are undergoing a transformation from centers of poverty to symbols of prosperity. With political decentralization and an evolving urban economy that now significantly contributes to our national GDP. Our urban centers are increasingly focusing on climate resilience and green innovations.”

The forum comes at a critical juncture as Africa experiences rapid urban growth, with cities expanding at an annual rate of 15 percent continent-wide, while Ethiopia’s urban growth stands at  5.4 percent, she said.

She stated that this growth underscores both the continent’s dynamic population and the pressing need for innovative solutions to address urban challenges.

The minister outlined Ethiopia’s commitment to addressing these challenges through policy frameworks and harness the growth potential of cities.

Accordingly, policies are in place to transform urban areas into engines of prosperity and align with the broader goals of Agenda 2063 for a thriving and sustainable Africa, Chaltu added.

“As we gather for this forum, let us use this opportunity to share insights, exchange best practices, and forge meaningful partnerships. Our mission is to develop solutions that are innovative and practical, ensuring that the benefits of urbanization are equitably distributed and contribute to a prosperous future for all Africans., ” she underscored.

The Africa Urban Forum is a call for action for policymakers, urban planners, development partners, and community leaders to collaborate and innovate.

“We envision an Africa where urban centers provide quality education, healthcare, and social services. Our goal is to ensure that urban environments are safe, accessible, and equitable for all citizens, addressing immediate concerns while planning for long-term sustainability.”

Participants of the forum are urged to view the challenges of urbanization not merely as obstacles but as opportunities for transformative growth, using foresight and creativity to shape the future of Africa’s cities.

The Africa Urban Forum stands as a pivotal moment in the continent’s journey towards a sustainable, vibrant, and equitable urban future, it was learned.
