AUC chairperson praises AUSSOM peacekeepers’ bravery, sacrifices in restoring peace to Somalia

Addis Ababa, March 24, 2025 (FMC) – The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, visited the African Union Stabilization Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Base today during his official visit to Somalia.

He commended AUSSOM peacekeepers for their bravery and sacrifices in restoring peace to Somalia, recognizing their pivotal role in advancing Africa’s stability agenda. Reaffirming the AU’s unwavering commitment, he pledged to address operational challenges and improve troop welfare to strengthen the mission’s impact.

“Your service exemplifies African solidarity in action,” he stated, honoring the peacekeepers’ dedication to Somalia’s future.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also appealed for continued international support to sustain Somalia’s ongoing security and stabilization efforts.

At a joint press conference in Mogadishu on Sunday after meeting Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the AUC Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s pursuit of peace & security.

He also acknowledged that securing funding remains a significant challenge. To address it, he pledged to engage international partners to secure continued funding for AU Peace Support Operations in Somalia. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed optimism that AUSSOM’s challenges could be overcome with the AU’s backing.

It is worth noting that the AUC Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf arrived in Mogadishu Sunday, for a two-day official visit to Somalia.
