AU Commemorates 29th Anniversary of Genocide Against Tutsi in Rwanda
Addis Ababa, April 7, 2023 (FBC) – The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union Commission (AUC), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in Ethiopia and Permanent Mission to the African Union have commemorated the 29th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
According to AU, this year’s commemoration held under the theme “Remember-Unite-Renew” at the Nelson Mandela Hall which has started with “A Walk to Remember”, followed by the Official commemoration ceremony at African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today.
Int’l Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda “Preventing genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and other serious violations of international law is a shared responsibility, it is a core duty of every member of the UN”, as quoted by UN Ethiopia.
Today’s commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda aims to awaken greater awareness of the African peoples and the international community about the value of life and humanity and to renew our collective commitment to protect and uphold fundamental human rights, AU has stated.
The 29th Commemoration has attended by Officials from the African Union Commission (AUC), AU Member States, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, AU Organs, Religious Institutions, Human Rights Institutions, Intergovernmental Organisations, Civil Society Organisations, UN Agencies, Think Tanks, International Organisations, Schools and Academic Institutions in Ethiopia, AU has disclosed.
