TEL AVIV, September 2 (Sputnik) – At least 27 Israeli police officers have been injured as a result of clashes with Eritrean asylum seekers in southern Tel Aviv, the Israeli police said on Saturday, adding that two Eritreans were detained.
“At least 27 police officers have sustained injuries in the clashes. Two violators of the legal order from Eritrea have been detained,” the police said in a statement.
The police officers had to open fire from service weapons due to “danger to their lives,” the statement read. It added that at least three asylum seekers were wounded.
The Times of Israel newspaper reported that the clashes left four people injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been informed about the ongoing clashes in Tel Aviv and issued instructions to restore public order, his office said.
Earlier in the day, clashes broke out after a group of refugees from Eritrea attacked a pro-Eritrean government demonstration in southern Tel Aviv.
