Addis Ababa, October 2, 2024 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s push to become a member state of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has received a boost from the World Bank Group as the Group has affirmed its backing to the East African nation’s push to join the international trade regulating and facilitating organization.
The story was disclosed by the Minister of Trade and Regional Integration of Ethiopia, Kassahun Goffe, following his meeting at his office today with the officials of the World Bank on the possible areas that the bank can support Ethiopia’s efforts to become a member of WTO.
In the discussion, Mr. Kassahun briefed the delegates about the steps and measures Ethiopia has taken so far to become a member of the World Trade Organization and the commitment and preparedness of the government.
In that regard, the Minister called on the World Bank (WB) to help Ethiopia to facilitate the process by pointing out the issues in which WB can support his country’s efforts.
Responding to the Minister’s call, the officials of WB appreciated the measures and processes that Ethiopia is taking to become a member of the World Trade Organization. They confirmed that the bank will support the efforts and process of Ethiopia financially and technically.
