WFP urges donor countries to double humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, April 9, 2022 (FBC) – The World Food Program (WFP) has urged donor countries to double humanitarian assistance as number of people in need is increasing due to manmade and natural disasters.

WFP Ethiopia Deputy Director Representative, Mietek Maj noted that the number of people who are in need of humanitarian aid in Ethiopia is surging due to the conflict in the northern part of the country and the drought condition in parts of Oromia and Somali Regions.

He said food subsidies for refugees in Ethiopia have decreased from 18 percent to 16 percent over the past three consecutive months.

He said WF) is providing emergency humanitarian assistance to 3.4 million people in Amhara, Afar and Tigray regions.

Mietek Maji added that 3.3 million people have been affected by the drought in the Somali region and 2.4 million of them have been provided with relief support.

The Country Director Representative also indicated that 20 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid and a fuel truck entered Tigray region just after the humanitarian truce was declared by the government.
