Addis Ababa, December 1, 2022 (FBC) – The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, stated that the efforts to ensure lasting peace in Ethiopia under the auspices of the African Union should be strengthened.
United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, and African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, made a statement in Addis Ababa.
The two topmost international and continental organizations’ officials made the statement at the opening of the joint meeting of the United Nations and the African Union Commission on Human Rights.
It is stated that the meeting will mainly focus on human rights and climate change in African countries.
In his statement, UNSG António Guterres said that the continued efforts to ensure lasting peace in Ethiopia under the aegis of the African Union should be strengthened.
He said that the implementation of the peace agreement between the Ethiopian government and TPLF should be strengthened and continued.
Regarding the implementation of the agreement, the UN Secretary General said that the dialogue carried out by the military leaders of the two sides is promising.
The UN chief emphasized that attempts to change the government in an unconstitutional manner are unacceptable.
He further emphasized that the African continent should be developed by utilizing its resources potential.
AUC Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on his part, reaffirmed that the African Union Commission will provide all the necessary support for the peace agreement implementation.
