Addis Ababa, December 14, 2024 (FMC) – The United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS – United Nations Mission in South Sudan) has decided to name the 19th Motorized Battalion Force Zone, formerly known as Tumbura Camp, as Adwa Camp.
Speaking on the decision, the Force Commander of UNMISS Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian noted that the decision was dedicated to the Ethiopian peacekeeping forces that are carrying out their designated mission with great efficiency.
According to him, this move was also made in recognition of Ethiopian peacekeepers’ heroic contribution, commitment, and resilience to the peace and stability of Tumbura in South Sudan, comparing their commitment and perseverance with their forefathers’ at the famous Adwa victory over the Italian colonial power in 1896.
It has been stated that the Ethiopian peacekeepers fulfill their duty with great efficiency.
The commander of the 19th Motorized Battalion, Colonel Alemu Kinkina, said for his part that Adwa is a symbol of unity and perseverance of Ethiopians and said that he was happy that the camp was named after the famous Adwa victory because it recognizes the level of importance of Ethiopian peacekeeping forces.
Colonel Alemu stated that this is a proud moment for the peacekeepers and reiterated the Ethiopian peacekeeping forces’ continued commitment in executing their missions.
It is known that the Battle of Adwa was a significant victory for Ethiopia as it marked the first time an African nation defeated a European colonial power. The Ethiopians’ sacrifice, dedication, and perseverance were crucial in achieving this victory. This victory not only preserved Ethiopia’s independence but also inspired other African nations in their fight against colonialism.
It remains a symbol of Ethiopian pride and resilience.
