Addis Ababa, November 12, 2022 (FBC) – Regional Representative Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, East Africa Regional Office, Marcel C. Akpovo and the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the East African Region of the United Nations, Perry Mbibong, visited the Ethiopian Federal Police Headquarters and the General Department of Criminal Investigation.
During their visit, the High Commissioners of Human Rights observed the digitization of investigations carried out by the Ethiopian Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department.
Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner, General Demelash Gebre-Michael, in his discussion with the UN officials, explained the reform carried out in his institute in the last four years.
He also explained the results of handling of human rights achieved by the Department.
Marsel C. Akpovo recalled that the Ethiopian Federal Police used to receive criticisms for its handling of human rights before the institutional reform. However, he confessed that the current handling of human rights during investigation process by the Institute is based on the international standards, confirming that they witnessed that there are concrete changes.
He also pledged that they will provide assistance to maintain the encouraging reform by the Ethiopian Federal Police.
