Addis Ababa, April 23, 2024 (FBC) – On International Mother Earth Day, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres delivered a powerful message urging immediate action to repair humanity’s relationship with the planet.
He emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating, “Repairing relations with Mother Earth is the mother of all of humanity’s challenges.” Guterres highlighted the interconnectedness between human actions and environmental consequences, pointing out that “Humanity is acting like Mother Earth’s delinquent child.”
The Secretary General outlined key steps towards a sustainable future, calling for countries to produce new national climate plans aligned with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These plans, he noted, could serve as both national transition and investment strategies, laying the foundation for sustainable development for generations to come.
Mr. Guterres also stressed the importance of the G20 leading a global phaseout of fossil fuels and discontinuing nature-wrecking subsidies, particularly those supporting the production of environmentally harmful plastics.
In his address, Guterres underscored the urgency of the situation, urging swift and decisive action: “We must act – and act now – to create a better future for us all.” His remarks resonated with a call to prioritize environmental conservation, climate justice, and sustainable practices to safeguard the planet for current and future generations.
International Mother Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22nd to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices. The day serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness between humanity and the planet, emphasizing the importance of preserving and protecting the Earth for future generations.
