Addis Ababa, March 29, 2022 (FBC) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to Kenya, Meles Alem paid a courtesy call to Jane Marriott, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Kenya on Monday.
During the meeting, the two exchanged views on the current developments in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa region.
Ambassador Meles briefed the High Commissioner on the nationwide political dialogue in Ethiopia and declaration of indefinite humanitarian truce in the Tigray region to ensure unfettered access to humanitarian support for the people in need.
He also appreciated the Government of the United Kingdom for welcoming the truce and he called upon the Government of the UK to extend its support to the efforts of the Ethiopian Government to realize a lasting peace and development.
The High Commissioner, on her part, commended the move of the government and expressed her hope that Ethiopia will soon get back to its previously known state of stability and play its anchor role as a hub of regional peace and stability.
Commending the measures taken to open humanitarian corridors, she reiterated the readiness of the UK to provide the necessary support for the success of the comprehensive national dialogue and the overall rehabilitation process in Ethiopia.
During the deliberation, Ambassador Meles said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has a potential in facilitating economic integration in the region and assured the unwavering commitment of Ethiopia to solve outstanding issues with the lower riparian countries through the principle of equitable use of the Nile water and through a win-win approach, under the negotiation process led by the African Union.
The high commissioner, on her part, congratulated the Government of Ethiopia for the launching of the power generation and expressed her belief that the stalemate with Sudan and Egypt over the GERD issue will be solved through negotiation.
