Trans-Caspian Freight Traffic Increases by 62% – Kazakh Prime Minister

ASTANA, February 5 (RIA Novosti) – Freight transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route has increased by 62% over the past year, reaching 4.5 million tonnes, Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said on Wednesday.

Bektenov and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze discussed trade and economic cooperation during a meeting in Astana on Wednesday.

“Over the past year, freight traffic along Trans-Caspian International Transport Route has grown by 62% to 4.5 million tonnes. To further expand the route’s capacity and eliminate weak points, we are improving infrastructure, enhancing port and terminal facilities, increasing rolling stock, reducing administrative barriers, and creating favorable conditions for carriers,” Bektenov said, as quoted by his press office.

The Middle Corridor’s throughput capacity is expected to reach 10 million tonnes per year by 2027, the office said. Additionally, a new multimodal terminal in Georgia’s Poti port, currently under construction by a Kazakh transport and logistics investment group, is scheduled to become operational this year.

Bektenov and Kobakhidze also discussed energy cooperation, particularly the transportation of Kazakh oil and petroleum products to global markets. In 2024, 1.4 million tonnes of Kazakh oil were shipped via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, with plans to gradually increase shipments to 2.2 million tonnes per year.
