Addis Ababa, November 20, 2022 (FBC) – Athlete Tigist Ketema won the 22nd Great Ethiopian Run 10km race women’s category, whereas athlete Abe Gashaw won the men’s category.
The 22nd edition of the Great Ethiopian Run is the biggest in Africa and the 6th largest street race in the world.
The grand athletics event was held on Sunday morning, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Athlete Abe Gashaw of the Amhara Region Penitentiary academy won the 10km men’s race, while athlete Hailemariam Amare from the Federal Penitentiary academy came second and Gemechu Dida from Ethio Electric finished third.
In women’s category, athlete Tigist Ketema from the OromiaRegion Forest Conservation Institute finished the competition in first place, while athlete Mestawet Fikr from Addis Ababa Police took second place and Foten Tesfaye from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia claimed third place.
The FDRE President, Sahlework Zewde, Culture and Sports Minister,Kejela Merdasa, and Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie attended the opening ceremony of this 10km street race.
More than 40,000 runners across the globe, including professional athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Eritrea, and other countries, retired runners, invited guests, tourists and residents of Addis Ababa and other cities participated in the 2022 grand Ethiopian street race.
Kenyan long-distance athlete Peres Jepchirchir and her compatriot and former long-distance runner Moses Tanui were among guests of honor of the event.
Spearheaded by the now retired iconic long distance athlete, Haile Gebresellasie, the Great Ethiopian Run was introduced and held in 2001 for the first time.
It is not only a competition right now, but it is also a great platform that has been transformed into a tourist attraction.
