Thailand’s Foreign Ministry confirms BRICS partner country status

Addis Ababa, December 27, 2024 (FMC) – Thailand has officially accepted an invitation from Russia, the 2024 BRICS Сhair, to become a partner country of the BRICS group. This is reported by the official website of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Prior to that, Russia extended an official invitation to Thailand to join as a BRICS partner country. Thailand’s Cabinet approved the proposal on 24 December, and the Kingdom’s Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, conveyed Thailand’s positive response in a formal letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to the Summary of Weekly Press Briefing by the Director-General of the Thailand Department of Information, as a BRICS partner, Thailand aims to bolster relations with the group’s member states while also fostering stronger connections with other developing nations.

The partnership is expected to enhance Thailand’s role as a bridge-builder between BRICS countries and the global community, facilitating cooperation and economic integration.Thailand’s interest in BRICS membership was reaffirmed earlier in 2024 when Foreign Minister Sangiampong presented a formal letter of intent to Sergey Lavrov during the BRICS Dialogue with Developing Countries in Nizhny Novgorod.

This marked the fifth high-level BRICS meeting attended by Thai representatives, underscoring the kingdom’s commitment to deeper engagement with the group.

Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov announced that Belarus, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan will become BRICS partner countries.
