Addis Ababa, April 22, 2023 (FBC) – Addis Ababa city administration inaugurated today the monument and memorial park of the late Chief of General Staff of the FDRE National Defense Forces, General Se’are Mekonnen.
The monument and the memorial park were built in Bole Rwanda area of Addis Ababa city.
The unveiling ceremony was held in the presence of Addis Ababa Mayor, Adanech Abiebie, Minister of Defense, Abraham Belay, ENDF General Officers, family members of the late General Se’are, as well as his former colleagues.
During her remarks at the inaugural event, Addis Ababa Mayor, Adanech Abiebie, said “General Se’are Mekonnen was a great leader who fought steadfastly for equality and justice for human beings since he was young, fought for the unity of Ethiopia, and worked for the unity of Ethiopia by saying, “The defense army has no ethnic identity but a country.””
“Although the sacrifice saddens us, we are comforted because the purpose of the sacrifice is a living story that will build a great generation. Young people learn patriotism, faithful service and national brotherhood from General Se’are Mekonen”, she added.
It is also stated that the Addis Ababa city administration has covered the full cost of the statue and the memorial park.
Calling for strong unity, Defense Minister, Abraham Belay, has paid his tribute to the late chief of general staff of ENDF.
On behalf of the Ministry of Defense, the Addis Ababa city administration took the initiative, provided the necessary coordination role and allotted budget for building the monument and the memorial park, it is mentioned.
The veteran General Se’are served as head of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) Northern Command and the military’s joint education and training department. He was appointed as the Chief of General Staff of ENDF in May 2018, succeeding General Samora Yenus, and served until his death on 22 June 2019.
