Addis Ababa, November 18, 2024 (FBC) – A delegation from South Sudan visited Ethiopia to learn about its current social protection programs over the past few days. The delegation was led by Aya Benjamin Warille, Minister of Gender, Child & Social Service of South Sudan.
The primary goal of their mission was to understand the implementation arrangements and financial mechanisms that support Ethiopia’s social protection initiatives. The meeting was also attended by representatives from the World Bank, highlighting the global interest in these programs.
State Minister Ms. Semereta Sewasew of Ministry of Finance has warmly welcomed the delegation and commended their efforts to learn from Ethiopia’s experiences. She emphasized the significant role that social protection programs have played in reducing poverty in Ethiopia. Over the past two decades, these programs have been instrumental in supporting citizens, thanks to the commitment of both the Ethiopian Government and its development partners.
During the discussions, presentations were made regarding the budget, financial flows, and the organizational arrangements of the social protection programs. These insights covered the distribution of resources from the federal to the woreda level, ensuring that beneficiaries receive the support they need. The World Bank team also praised the Ethiopian government’s leadership and dedication to implementing these programs effectively.
In conclusion, the South Sudanese delegation expressed their gratitude to the Ethiopian government for successfully implementing the social protection programs and for their commitment to continue funding these initiatives. This meeting marked a significant step towards fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between the two nations, with the hope of replicating Ethiopia’s success in South Sudan.
