Russians celebrate Epiphany holiday

Addis Ababa, January 19, 2023 (FBC) – Russians celebrate today the Baptism of Jesus Christ with religious ceremony, according to the Russian Embassy in Addis Ababa.

The weather during this time of the year is usually very harsh in Russia and there’s even an aphorism – ‘Epiphany frosts’, the Embassy’s social media post indicates.

According to tradition, the night before the Epiphany and during the entire day, people dive into an ice hole called ‘Jordan’ that is made in the form of the Holy Cross.

It is said that this ceremony is held to commemorate the baptism of Jesus Christ in Jordan.

The Embassy further indicates that the Russians, including President Vladimir Putin, are celebrating the holiday by taking a dip in the ice hole called Jordan.
