Addis Ababa, October 6, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia’s Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), National ID Ethiopia and the UN Refugee Agency Ethiopia Office penned a tripartite agreement on 06 October 2023, a joint press release confirms.
According to the joint press release published on RRS social media page, the agreement is aimed to help refugees easily access basic services such as health insurance, education, banking and driving, among other things.
During the signing ceremony, RRS Director General, Ms. Teyiba Hassen stressed that the agreement is testimony to Ethiopia’s commitment to better protect refugees and help them enjoy their rights.
Executive Director of National ID Program, Mr. Yodahe Zemichael, revealed the plan that Ethiopia is set to issue digital IDs to 90 million people, including refugees and displaced persons.
UN Refugee Agency Representative to Ethiopia, Mr. Andrew Mbogori, reckoned that the move is a big milestone in the Ethiopia refugee operation, and vowed that UNHCR would keep working with the Government of Ethiopia to translate the accord into action.
RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen, National ID Program Executive Director Yodahe Zemichael and UNHCR Representative to Ethiopia Andrew Mbogori signed the tripartite agreement on the premises of RRS.
