Road, trade interconnection of HoA region pivotal to maintain peace in border areas: former Ethiopian PM

Addis Ababa, December 24, 2022 (FBC) – The Horn of Africa region should be interconnected through trade, roads and tourism, in order to maintain peace and harmony in the border area of ​​the neighbouring countries, according to the former Ethiopian Prime Minister, Haile-Mariam Desalegn.

A culture, tourism and peace festival was held in Kangaten town, Nnangatom woreda of South Omo zone, in which pastoralists from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia participated under the theme of “Ekumomor for regional integration”.

Haile-Mariam Desalegn, who participated in the ceremony, underscored that in order to maintain the peace in the border area of ​​the neighbouring countries, it is necessary to benefit the people by connecting the region through trade, road infrastructure, tourism and other sustainable development activities.

ENA’s report indicates that the “Ekumomor Festival”, where East African countries participated, has the potential to contribute greatly to the success of the regional connection that Ethiopia has started through its foreign diplomacy.

Haile-Mariam also said that the role of the Ekumomor Festival in strengthening lasting peace and regional ties is outstanding.

He also emphasized that the peace and people-to-people closeness seen in the border area in the last two years is an indication of the real change brought about by the Ekumomor Festival.

Chief Speaker of the South Ethiopia Peoples’ Region, Ms Fattie Sermelo, said that the Ekumomor Festival has contributed greatly to the success of the regional integration that Ethiopia has started through its foreign diplomacy.
