Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed inaugurates 19Bln Birr Tana Beles Sugar Factory One

Addis Ababa, June 6, 2021 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed along with other high ranking government officials has inaugurated Tana Beles Sugar Factory One that has completed its 15 days trial production period.

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, First Lady Zinash Tayachew, Presidents of Amhara and Sidama regions Agegnehu Teshager and Desta Lodamo and a number of senior officials have attended the inauguration ceremony.

On the occassion, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia has been accomplishing various mega projects combating pressures from internal and external forces working to disrupt in path to prosperity.

The government has given due attention for green development to pass ecofriendly nation to the generation, he noted.

Tana Beles Sugar giant has a capacity of crushing 160,000 ton of shugarcane and producing 12,000 ton of sugar on a daily basis which is equivalent to 2.3 million tons per annum.

The plant which has been built at a total cost of 19 Billion Birr has facilitated job opportunities for more than 80,000 people during its construction period.

According to officials, the plant is believed to better address the growing sugar demand in the country and facilitate more jobs for citizens.

Tana Beles Sugar Development Project, one is found at Jawwi district of Awi Zone in Amhara Regional State. The project has the capacity of crushing 12 thousand tons of sugarcane a day using sugarcane planted on 13,667 hectares of land. It is indicated that the plant needs 21,000 hectars of sugarcane when goes fully operational.

Project is said to start producing 45 MW of electric power in the near future out of which 15 MW will be used for internal operational purpose in the factory.
