Addis Ababa, April 11, 2020 (FBC) – President Sahle-Work Zewde has presided over a virtual emergency meeting of the Commission on the Futures of Education which was established by the Director General of UNESCO.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss how COVID-19 has affected education and devise recommendations, according to Office of the President.
The President stated “At my age, I have seen a multitude of effects caused by various crises. But with the current global pandemic, I am not sure we have drawn the pivotal lessons from the past required to mitigate the ill-effects of the disruptions caused to our lives.
“COVID-19 does not discriminate and is redefining our reality; we should respond with humility, solidarity and empathy.”
Commission members agreed that this global health pandemic will not be defeated by health measures alone.
It will be solved by building civic trust and strengthening international cooperation as well as through empathy and an appreciation of our common humanity.
