President lauds ERCS efforts to combat COVID-19

Addis Ababa, May 8, 2020 (FBC) –On the occasion of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, President Sahle-Work Zewde today received heads of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) at the National Palace.

The President, who is also the patron of the ERCS, and the leadership discussed the national responses to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

She appreciated the key role that the society has been playing and encouraged them to continue their efforts, according to office of the President.

The society has been engaging in various activities to combat the spread of the Coronavirus such as spraying streets in various cities with disinfectant, mobilizing volunteers and distributing sanitary products.

The World Red Cross day has been observed today to celebrate the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

On this day, people pay tributes to the Red Cross volunteers for their contribution in helping those in need.

The day is observed on May 8 on the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, who was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
