Addis Ababa, October 15, 2020 (FBC) –As a continuation of the political dialogue platform, political parties operating in Ethiopia today discussed on different national agendas.
Heads of the parties, including Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, attended the discussion focused on Ethiopia’s constitution, political system and democracy.
The participants reflected their views on research papers presented at the event assessing weaknesses and strengths of constitutions issued in Ethiopia from 1939-1991
At the event, they looked back and discussed on the Fetha Negest, a supreme law of Ethiopia before a constitution was issued during the time of Emperor Haile Selassie.
The parties also reviewed the strengths and flaws of the constitution written after a regime change in Ethiopia in 1991.
The current constitution earned praise form the participants for granting recognition for nations and nationalities as well as establishing term limits, while receiving criticism for interfering in democratic institutions.
The participants blamed the constitutions issued from 1939-1991 for not including Fethan Ngest, Gada system and other traditional systems of governance.
After attending the event, the Prime Minister tweeted “I am pleased to witness the continuation of the political dialogue platform with another session taking place today.”
“These discussions are key in enabling political parties to work closely together; jointly address issues that arise and co-create a vision of growth and prosperity in service to country and our people,” he added.
