Addis Ababa February 13, 2023 (FBC) – The opening session of the Political Meeting of the African Governance Platform to be held tomorrow, 14th February 2023, at the African Union Commission Conference center (NCC), according to African Union Commission.
The session, according to AUC, deliberate on the progress in the implementation of the flagship projects by the platform members aimed at promoting and protecting human and people’s rights, consolidating democratic institutions and culture and ensure good governance and the rule of law in Africa.
AUC stated that the Opening Session will be addressed by, among others, Amb. Bankole Adeoye, African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Workneh Gebeyehu, Executive Secretary, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Rémy Ngoy Lumbu, Chairperson, African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
AU added that other participants who will be at the meeting include: President, African Court on Human and People’s Rights, Commissioner, African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Chairperson, African Union Advisory Board on Corruption, Chairperson, African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, Economic, Social and Cultural Council CEO, African Peer Review Mechanism and President, Pan-African Parliament.
The African Governance Architecture was established in 2012 as a “platform for dialogue between the various stakeholders” who are mandated to promote good governance, human rights and strengthen democracy in Africa, in addition to translating the objectives of the legal and policy pronouncements in the AU Shared Values.
The establishment of the AGA was premised on the need to enhance the impact of various AU and Regional Economic Communities interventions in addressing governance deficits on the continent.
