Police arrests three individuals for trying to withdraw 2 bln Birr from a bank using fake cheque

Addis Ababa, August 7, 2021 (FBC) – The Federal Police have arrested three persons in connection with an attempt to withdraw money from a bank account using a fake cheque.

The Head of the Financial Crime Investigations Director at the Federal Police Commission, Assistant Commissioner Berhanu Abebe said the suspects have been caught red-handed while trying to withdraw the money from the deposit of Salini Construction in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE).

Suspects have been captured in Lemi Kura Sub City, Addis Ababa around Yetebaberut Gas Station with the vehicle which they were using for their fraudulent deed, he said.

The suspects namely Tesfamichael Tamene, Tekleberhan Berhe and Mekbib Belay are also suspected in having connections with the terrorist TPLF.

Salini Construction is an international company which has been undertaking hydropower construction works in the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) Project since its inception.
