Addis Ababa, October 25, 2020 (FBC) –Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed is currently visiting the damages caused by desert locust in Werebabo woreda, South Wello zone of the Amhara regional state.
Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen, Chief Administrator of Amhara regional state, Temesgen Tiruneh and other high-ranking government officials also travelled to the area along with the Prime Minister.
The locusts have damaged 9, 000 hectares of sorghum in the woreda.
Various efforts have been made by the government, including aerial spraying, to mitigate the impact of locust swarms.
After the visit, the Prime Minister tweeted that “One of the biggest challenges we’ve experienced over the past months in addition to COVID19 has been the desert locust swarm invasion.”
He vowed that the government will support farmers whose crops have been destroyed by the locust.
