Addis Ababa, August 16, 2024 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) today announced a plan to plant over 600 million tree seedlings in a single day across Ethiopia, scheduled for August 23, 2024.
This ambitious campaign is part of the government’s plan to achieve its goal of planting over 7.5 billion tree seedlings during this year’s Green Legacy planting cycle.
In a message published on his social media page, the Prime Minister called on Ethiopians to get ready for this massive tree-planting campaign, which aims to plant over 600 million tree seedlings within a 12-hour period on August 23, 2024. “Let’s plant 600 million tree seedlings in a single day [on August 23, 2024],” he noted.
In his message, Prime Minister Abiy also emphasized the importance of unity among Ethiopians, stating that together, they could achieve more. “Let us leave our legacy all over Ethiopia with one spirit. If we are one, we can do more,” he underscored.
PM Abiy encouraged every adult and teenager to leave a legacy for the next generation by planting more than 20 and 10 seedlings on that day, respectively.
The premier further stressed the significance of showing love for the country and giving a gift to the next generation through this tree-planting campaign.
Last year, on July 17, Ethiopia successfully planted over 566 million tree seedlings in a single day, surpassing the initial target 500 million seedlings set for that day. This year’s campaign aims to build upon that success and further contribute to the country’s reforestation efforts.
