PM calls for focus on GERD, commends Off-Grid energy as part of electrification scheme

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2020 (FBC) – While addressing the parliament today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will become more demanding in the future in terms of finance, technology and engineering.

“The project combines both opportunity and challenges. Those who want it to fail encourage us to protect it and keep it going. Despite the challenges we face, we must not take our focus off GERD.”, the premier noted.

The Koysha project, which includes hydro, solar and geothermal alternatives, has now continued as well.

So far, 69 additional woredas have gained access to electricity. Solar services have been launched in 12 small towns. Aside the conventional power generation system, we will continue to expand the power supply using off grid energy options.

Efforts are underway to attract the private sector in the power generation sector including the geothermal, solar and wind farm areas, the premier said.

The premier said activities are underway to initiate 25 additional solar projects to boost the national electrification shceme.

The Off-Grid energy sector has a paramount significance to address power loss which is common in the conventional power generation sphere which is experiencing 30 pct of waste during distribution phases.

He underlined that the government is working to leverage the immense potentials of the country in the solar energy area.
