PM Abiy’s visit to Rwanda, Uganda fruitful in enhancing ties between Ethiopia, two nations

Addis Ababa, September 2, 2021 (FBC) – In a biweekly press briefing, Spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dina Mufti briefed local and international media on political, economic and public diplomacy issues of Ethiopia.

During the briefing, Ambassador Dina said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent visit to Rwanda and Uganda and his discussions with leaders of the two countries has been fruitful in enhancing bilateral and regional ties between Ethiopia and the nations.

Prime Minister Abiy and the two African leaders discussed opportunities, challenges and possible solutions to address common problems with concerted regional efforts, the Spokesperson disclosed.

On the other hand, he said the Ethiopian envoy to the UN has reiterated Ethiopia’s ongoing activities and further commitment to addressing the humanitarian situation in Tigray and other impacted areas including Amhara and Afar regions.

Ambassador Dina Mufti also said that Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen held a phone conversation with India Foreign Minister on ways of enhancing ties between the two countries. Indian Foreign Affairs Minister said that Ethiopia is in a good position to resolve circumstances in Tigray region and GERD issues with its own existing mechanism without need of external help, he said.

Today’s discussion between Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen and Kenyan Foreign Minister Raychelle Omamo has been fruitful in enhancing multifaceted ties between the two sisterly countries.

According to Ambassador Dina, Ambassador Raychelle Omamo reaffirmed her country’s commitment to the peace, unity and sovereignty of Ethiopia. She also said Ethiopia is capable of addressing its domestic issues including the situation in Tigray and GERD with its own existing mechanisms.

Regarding activities under way to repatriate undocumented citizens from several countries, the Spokesperson said that Ethiopia has brought home 2009 compatriots from Saudi Arabia, 54 from Tanzania and 115 from Yemen.

The spokesperson further underscored that Ethiopians in UK, Uganda and Israel and other parts of the world have expressed solidarity with the National Defense Forces in pro-goverment events they staged this week.
