Addis Ababa, October 6, 2022 (FBC) – FDRE Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the launch of Safaricom Ethiopia service is a demonstration of Ethiopia’s strategy of information communication technology as the engine of its prosperity.
Safaricom Ethiopia’s nationwide internet service launch program was held at the Friendship Square on Thursday October 6.
The program was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Kenyan President William Ruto, company leaders and invited guests.
In his speech at the official launching event, Prime Minister Abiy said that the launch of Safaricom Ethiopia service portrays Ethiopia’s use of ICT as the engine of its prosperity.
Kenyan President William Ruto, on his part, said that the launch of Safaricom service in Ethiopia will strengthen regional ties.
Safaricom has officially started its network test service on Thursday in Addis Ababa as well as last weeks in Dire-Dawa, Bahir Dar, Awoday, Gondar, Mojo, Harar, Adama, Bishoftu and Debre Berhan cities.
The company started providing service with (+2517) code.
Safaricom has built a data center in Addis Ababa and Adama at a cost of 100 million USD, and announced that two more data centers will be built in both cities this year.
The company also indicated that it has a plan to improve the benefits of the sector by investing 8.5 billion USD in the next ten years.
