Addis Ababa, June 3, 2022 (FBC) – The Stockholm+50 conference is taking place under the theme: “Stockholm+50: A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity.”
Addressing participants the Prime Minister said that the Stockholm+50 conference comes at a time when the world is dealing with different environmental concerns as well as raising inequalities.
He called on all stakeholders to foster ties between state and non-states actors in order to increase collaboration and solidary.
“As we mark the 50th anniversary of Stockholm conference, we must consider what we have done to implement the principles of Stockholm declaration individually and collective. More significantly we must prepare ourselves for the rising environmental challenges that we now encounter on regular basis.”
It is vital to ensure that adequate means are put in place to strengthen national institutional capacities, he underscored, stressing need to build the necessary capabilities to comply the international environmental agreements.
Ethiopia has been contributing its fair share towards ensuring a healthy planet on all forms, Prime Minister Abiy underlined.
Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative is an ambitious national flagship initiative launched in 2019 aiming to plant more than 20 billion seedlings by 2022, he explained. “By 2021, we proudly managed to plant 18 billion seedlings already,” the Premier indicated.
“This year we will exceed our four year milestone. This initiative has already paved the way for collaboration and solidarity in the sub region as we have been sharing our green legacy initiative to neighboring countries in the spirit of unity. Now, in the final year of our four year target, we will surpass the set goal.”
“As a nation laid the foundation for generational wellbeing, we invite all willing partners to join us in sustaining the green legacy journey for generations to come.”
