PM Abiy, advisory council mulling over issuance of two telecom licenses

Addis Ababa, May 20, 2021 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is consulting with the Privatization Advisory Council on the issuance of the two telecom licenses undergoing in line with the national privation process in the country.

As per the decision made by the government to grant telecom licenses for two telecom companies, Ethiopian Telecommunication Authority announced that Ministry of Finance received two bids from MTN and a Consortium named Global Partnership for Ethiopia.

The Consortium includes UK’s Vodafone, South African Vodacom, Kenya’s Safarocom and Japan’s Sumitomo Corp.

The Prime Minister said the Ethiopian Communications Authority provided a very detailed review of the new telecom license bidding process in the discussion with the telecom privatization advisory council.

Transparent account of the process and solicited inputs for the Council of Ministers weigh in making a decision on the licensing, he added.
