Addis Ababa, August 3, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Tourism of Ethiopia (MoT) announced that 61.1 billion birr was received from domestic tourism in the 2022/23 Ethiopian fiscal year.
The Ministry’s Head of Communication and Public Relations, Alemayehu Getachew, stated that various activities have been undertaken to revive the tourism sector in the last financial year.
In particular, effective works have been carried out in developing new tourist destinations as well as renovating and repairing existing ones, the PR Head said.
He also recalled that the Choke Mountain and Wonchi eco-tourism destinations have been recognized by the World Tourism Organization as best tourism village.
A research was conducted to identify and gather information on potential destinations for eco-tourism in various areas of the country, Alemayehu stated, confirming that more than 61.1 billion birr was received from a large number of local visitors.
The Ministry will focus on tourism development, market development, service excellence and institutional capacity building to further revive the sector, he said, adding that due emphasis will also be given to the development of new tourist destinations, the renovation and repair of existing attractions.
