Addis Ababa, November 2, 2023 (FBC) – Over 1,000 suspects who were arrested in connection with the security crisis in the Amhara region have been reintegrated with their families after receiving rehabilitation training, according to the FDRE Government Communication Service.
In his press briefing, Government Communication Service Minister, Legese Tulu, said that since the establishment of the General Directorate of State of Emergency in August, some 3 thousand 200 suspects have been detained in connection with the violence in the Amhara region, including the main actors of the security crisis.
Of these suspects, 1,052 individuals have admitted their wrongdoings that they have been deceived and hoodwinked into the situation and futile cause due to misinformation, lack of information, and confusion, the GCS Minister said while confirming that those suspects have been reunited with their families after receiving rehabilitation training.
Beside to the reintegrated suspects, other 931 individuals are currently undergoing rehabilitation training in the second round. Depending on their positive progress, these suspects will also be reunited with their families, Legese confirmed.
The GCS Minister further confirmed that some 317 suspects are still under investigation. Among these, 304 of them are being investigated for serious crimes and that 11 suspects have been incarcerated so far.
Regarding the current state of affairs of the Amhara region, the General Directorate of the State of Emergency assessment elucidates that the region is returning to normalcy and peaceful situation from the brink of collapse, Legese asserted.
According to him, the people’s desire for peace and the general public’s support for government security forces that are operating in the region increased greatly. The regional administration has also been restructured with new leadership, Legese reminded.
Regarding humanitarian assistance, the Minister further asserted that the government is working to address the food supply issues resulted from conflicts and drought in the Amhara region and other parts of the country.
