Addis Ababa, March 11, 2021 (FBC) –The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) said it has registered a total of 47 political parties and 8,209 candidates for the upcoming 6 general elections.
Of the total candidates registered at 673 constituencies across the country, some 125 are independents, said Birtukan Mideksa, Chairperson of the election board.
According to her, registration of candidates was conducted for the past 22 days.
She further said four of the political parties were registered to run only for seats at regional state councils. Two parties will compete for parliamentary seats.
During a press conference issued today, the Chairperson also stated challenges encountered by the NEBE since it began the electoral activities.
Lack of cooperation in transporting election materials, delays in opening offices, and problems related to security were mentioned as problems encountered by the board.
Ethiopia will hold national election early June this year.
