NBE Governor says youth technological talent dev’t key to cybersecurity

Addis Ababa, October 11, 2024 (FBC) – The governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, Mr. Mamo Mehretu, emphasized that cybersecurity plays an integral role in protecting digital resources and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Mr. Mamo made this remark during the opening of the 5th Cyber Security Month, which is being held at the Science Museum in Addis Ababa under the theme “Critical Infrastructure Security for Digital Sovereignty.”

On the occasion, Mr. Mamo highlighted the need for close attention to cybersecurity to guarantee the independence and sovereignty of Ethiopia’s digital system. He pointed out that in order to protect digital resources and fully ensure the safety of citizens, it is crucial to pay great attention to cybersecurity.

Furthermore, Mr. Mamo emphasized the importance of developing the technological talent of the youth by supporting the private sector in its role in the development of cyber technology.

He noted that this support is crucial for the advancement of Ethiopia’s digital sector and the protection of its critical infrastructure.

For her part, the Director General of Ethiopia’s Information Network Security Administration (INSA), Ms. Tigist Hamid, emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in protecting digital resources and ensuring the safety of citizens.

She highlighted that special attention is being given to cybersecurity in line with the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy Plan, with a focus on increasing awareness among citizens about the sector.

It was indicated that organizers emphasize the importance of this observance in raising awareness among both institutions and citizens regarding cyber security. The initiative aims to bolster cyber sovereignty by fostering effective coordination on a national level.

Throughout the month, various activities will take place, including discussions and consultations in the field of cyber security, student competitions, and programs highlighting the contributions of the 5 Million Coders Initiative to enhancing cyber safety.
