Addis Ababa, May 31, 2023 (FBC) – The national transitional justice public consultation and input gathering activities to be held in various regions of southern Ethiopia has started, the Ministry of Justice confirmed.
It is noted that in view of the critical role of the implementation of the transitional justice system for Ethiopia’s sustainable peace, democracy and development, various activities were undertaken for the successful implementation of the process.
‘Transitional Justice Policy Options’ was prepared by a high-level expert group organized by the Ministry of Justice to enable the drafting of a transitional justice policy.
The inaugural ceremony of the national consultation required for the preparation of the national transitional justice policy was also held in the presence of senior government officials.
It was indicated that consultations at the regional level have been scheduled to be held in more than 58 cities across the country from April to August 2023.
In conformance to the schedule, the first phase of the public consultation was successfully carried out in different cities of the Oromia region.
It is indicated that the second phase will be held from today until June 17, 2023 in 12 selected cities in Sidama, Southwest Ethiopia and South Ethiopia regions.
Individuals and stakeholders representing all sections of the society, who are identified and invited through a completely free and independent process, will participate in the consultations, the Ministry stated.
Participants are also expected to conduct a debate on alternative policy proposals presented by experts and freely share inputs to develop the policy alternatives document.
