Addis Ababa, December 9, 2024 (FMC) – The Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI) convened a regional dialogue focused on the crucial role of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in monitoring civic space and advocating for human rights defenders.
In his opening address, NANHRI Executive Director Gilbert Sebihogo emphasized a shared commitment to fostering an open civic environment where human rights defenders are celebrated and safeguarded.
He highlighted the significance of recent developments, including the establishment of the NANHRI Partnership and Liaison Office in Addis Ababa, which aims to enhance collaboration with the African Union and unite efforts across the continent.
NANHRI, representing 47 NHRIs and guided by the Paris Principles, underscores the importance of partnerships between NHRIs and civil society organizations to effectively combat challenges faced by human rights advocates, he said.
The Executive Director further pledged NANHRI’s commitment to support NHRIs in their vital roles, ensuring they are equipped to navigate their challenges while remaining effective in their mission to promote justice and human dignity.
The gathering served as a platform to strategize, share insights, and advocate for stronger legislative protections to enhance the safety and effectiveness of human rights work across Africa.
