USAID launches $49.8mln project to support maternal and child health

Addis Ababa, August 25, 2023 (FBC) – USAID Ethiopia’s Mission Director Scott Hocklander and State Minister of Health Dr. Dereje Dhuguma launched USAID – US Agency for International Development’s new Quality Healthcare Project.

This $49.8 million (more than 2.6 billion Birr) project will support maternal and child health in six regions across Ethiopia: Sidama, Amhara, Oromia, Central Ethiopia, South Ethiopia , and the Southwest Ethiopia Peoples’ Regions.

This work will be complemented by an upcoming project focused on healthcare issues specific to pastoral populations in the other regions of Ethiopia, according to the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa.

It is noted that the activity will fight three of the leading illnesses that threaten Ethiopia’s most vulnerable mothers and babies: neonatal sepsis, postpartum hemorrhage in mothers, and pneumonia in newborns.
