Addis Ababa, October 16, 2024 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Association of Anesthetists (EAA) in partnership with the Ministry of Health marked the 178th World Anesthesia Day with various events aimed at exploring mechanisms to ensure favorable working condition for health professionals.
In his keynote speech at the occasion, Vice President of EAA, explained about the historical evolution of the profession of anesthesiology, underscoring its broader significance in the realm of the health care delivery in Ethiopia and the world at large.
Saying that the field of anesthesiology is He called for concerted efforts to facilitate safety and quality in anesthesia practices in Ethiopia benefiting both the professionals and patients.
Dr. Elubabor Buno, Lead Executive Officer of Medical Services at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced various activities being undertaken by the institution to promote the role of associations of health professionals including EAA in realizing safe working atmosphere in the sector and quality services.
Dr. Elubabor stated that the Ministry in tandem with various stakeholders is working to provide professionals with incentives including social health insurance services.
During his keynote address, the State Minister of Health Dr. Ayele Teshome emphasized the diverse roles of anesthesia, which encompass not only surgical assistance but also emergency care and various other medical services. He recognized the vital contributions of anesthetists to the healthcare system and underscored the urgent need to tackle the ongoing shortage of professionals in this field.
Digitizing the referral works and decentralizing the service is among the activities being carried out by the Ministry to alleviate the burden on anesthetists and ensure safe working condition of the professionals.
He also announced a plan to build the capacity of professionals through short term and long-term trainings.
Dr. Ayele reaffirmed the Ministry of Health’s commitment to provide the association with all the necessary support to boost the number of trained anesthesia specialists and enhance their retention within the healthcare system.
