Addis Ababa, December 22, 2022 (FBC) – The Ministry of Water and Energy-Ethiopia (MoWE) has unveiled nine solar-powered irrigation projects in areas suitable for irrigation in Ethiopia.
The Ministry discussed with the residents and stakeholders today regarding the initiation of the project in Fogera woreda, South Gondar Zone, Amhara Region.
The State Minister for Energy at MoWE, Sultan Wali, in the discussion, the projects will reduce the financial cost and labour of the farmers who cultivate with irrigation.
He also stated that the nine solar-powered irrigation projects will be implemented in Oromia, Amhara, Sidama, and South Ethiopia Peoples’ regions.
The State Minister also announced that the various areas where the project will be implemented are Kebeles with surface and underground water for irrigation.
He said that the solar-powered project will not only draw the water from wells and distribute it, but will also provide energy to the villages.
ENA reported that this will be used to create job opportunities for the youth, expand mill services and other development activities, and thus increase universal benefits.
Sultan explained that the projects will benefit more than 15,000 members of society when they are completed and ready for use within one year.
