Addis Ababa, June 20, 2023 (FBC) – IGAD confirmed today that its member states have validated the IGAD Regional Food Safety Strategy to strengthen regional food and nutrition security.
The IGAD member state ministers in charge of Agriculture and food safety convene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the high-level ministerial meeting to validate IGAD Regional Food Safety and Post-Harvest Loss Management Strategies.
Ethiopia’s Agriculture Minister Girma Amente, other counterparts from IGAD member states, representatives of the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other stakeholders in the sector are participating in the high-level meeting, it is learned.
During today’s meeting, the Agriculture Ministers of IGAD member states have approved the implementation of the regional food safety strategy.
It is stated that the strategy will be implemented for the next five years.
It is to be remembered that IGAD, with the support of FAO, prepared a food safety strategy in 2022, aiming to strengthen food safety systems in the region and to implement fair practices in food marketing.
The high-level ministerial meeting is expected to recommend and approve IGAD’s next post-harvest management strategy.
