Addis Ababa, September 15, 2024 (FBC) – Sheikh Abdulhamid Ahmed, an executive member of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, has urged the Muslim community to embrace solidarity and tolerance as they celebrate the 1499th Mawlid al-Nabi, marking the birth of Prophet Mohammed. As celebrations unfold nationwide, Sheikh Abdulhamid emphasized Ethiopia’s rich history of peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians, encouraging the current generation to honor this legacy.
In an interview with EPA, Sheikh Abdulhamid highlighted that, despite inevitable disagreements, the essence of Islam is rooted in peace. As the Chairman of the National Prophet Mohammed Birth Celebration Committee, he stated, “Humanity itself brings peace, and Islam’s core message is peace.”
To echo this message, Sheikh Abdulhamid called on the community to assist the less fortunate and engage with neighbors during the festive period. This year’s celebration at the Grand Anwar Mosque in Addis Ababa included educational material donations for underprivileged students and a school feeding program.
Under the theme “Prophet of Peace,” this year’s festivities aim to promote the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad regarding peace. “As Muslims celebrate, they should foster the enduring culture of solidarity and tolerance,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of contributing to the nation’s development and peace.
Prof. Adam Kamil, head of Foreign Relations for the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, reinforced this message, advocating for collective efforts towards the nation’s growth while denouncing divisive attitudes. “Now is the time for unity to protect our country from invaders and warmongers,” he stated, encouraging the sharing of meals with the needy during the Mawlid celebrations
